8 Unique Uses for Silicone Hoses

Posted by Flex Technologies on 1st Nov 2016

Here at Flex Technologies, we live, breathe, and sleep silicone hoses, and if you’re already a silicone hose user for only one of the following categories, you might be surprised at the diverse variety of applications where silicone hoses are useful. Because of its versatility, durability, heat tolerance, and sheer beauty, silicone hose has made it into many different industries.

Auto Detailing

There’s nothing like the pizzaz of a glimpse of fiery red silicone hose under the hood of your car, and more and more auto enthusiasts are turning to Flex Technologies for silicone tubing in the coolant systems of their vehicles. Next time you’re at an auto show, look for the most unique color of silicone hose. A builder who went to the great lengths to order custom-colored hose probably also put the same level of attention to detail and customization into the rest of the vehicle.

Home Brewers

A home brewery is not difficult to set up, and whether you buy a kit or order your equipment piece by piece, one of the things you’ll need is siphon hose to transfer your beer or wine from one container to another without introducing a lot of air into the brew. This siphon hose is made of silicone hose tubing, and you can use various diameters and lengths depending on which equipment you’re using.

Dairies

Silicone tubing is a key component in milking machines. Milking machines use a vacuum pump to create a pulsating suction that creates the most efficient flow of milk from the cow’s udder into the tank. Because silicone tubing has a high tolerance for working in a vacuum, it is the tubing of choice in milking, functioning as a connector between the vacuum pump and the vacuum line, between the teat cups and the pulsator, and in some cases to carry the milk to the tank.

Hookah

Smoking hookah is no longer an exotic, unheard of thing that’s confined to hookah lounges, Indian or Middle Eastern restaurants, and import gift shops. Hookah pipes have now been made into a DIY at-home thing to do, and the hookah hose is usually made of a slender, flexible length of silicone tubing that allows the smoke to be drawn for a long enough distance to cool down before inhalation.

Aquariums

If you have a fish tank with air devices (e.g. air stones, air-driven filters, etc.), you know that you need a length of tubing to connect them. The standard for a long time was to use vinyl tubing, but silicone tubing lasts longer, doesn’t get stiff as quickly, and seals nicely between the air device in an aquarium and the supply air posts. It is a little more expensive than vinyl tubing, but many aquarium enthusiasts turn to silicone when they need greater flexibility and a hose that can withstand pressure.

Coffee

Many coffee makers, cappuccino makers, and espresso machines use silicone hoses internally as they have great heat resistance and aren’t prone to leaks. In some cases, these hoses are used to transport the water internally, and in models that have a milk reservoir to automatically froth the milk, the machine probably uses silicone hose to do this job.

Catheter Tubing

Medical-grade silicone tubing is used as the material of choice in many catheters due to its excellent biocompatibility, non-reactive chemical properties, relatively inert molecular structure, and excellent heat sensitivity.

Manufacturing

Silicone tubing is used extensively in the food, dairy, beverage, biotech, and pharmaceutical industries to transport products and fluids.

No matter what you use it for, silicone tubing has found its way into a huge number of uses. If you are looking for vacuum hosecharge air cooler hose, or any other type of silicone tubing product, check out our selection and order today!
