The Lion's Share
Africa may have actual lions, but when it comes to HVAC energy usage, the United States takes the lion's share. In fact, energy use for air conditioning units in America alone use more energy every year than the entire continent of Africa does with its entire energy uses. That is probably not exactly something to brag about, but it is certainly impressive!
AC Pioneers
Like all new technologies, even ones as comfortable as air conditioning, it took a while for ACs to gain popularity with United States residents and businesses. It took a few major companies adopting the new technology for that popularity to take hold. One of its early adopters was the New York Stock Exchange in New York City, which was one of the first buildings to receive AC back in 1903.
OG AC
The precursors of HVAC systems date back all the way to ancient times. Egyptians had cooling systems that utilized evaporation of wet reeds hung in their windows. Romans are also famous for an HVAC first; they were the first to use a warm air heating system.
Great Strides
Though basic precursors to air conditioners have been around for millennia, the concept of the modern air conditioner was first conceptualized by Michael Faraday (of Faraday cage fame) in 1820. It was at this time that he discovered that he could chill the surrounding air when compressed, liquefied ammonia was allowed to evaporate. This is the basic mechanism that modern air conditioners use today.
A Ripple Across Industries
As the world economy grows exponentially, industries can start to affect each other in interesting ways. One instance of this was with the introduction of air conditioning into movie theaters. After their introduction, ticket sales rose drastically in the warm summer months. That's because, on top of half the country experiencing heat waves, projectors create a lot of heat, making movie theaters almost unbearable without good AC.
Absorption and Adsorption
Absorption and Adsorption are both HVAC terms, but they are not interchangeable. Absorption refers to molecules absorbing light, heat, or other forms of energy. Adsorption refers to the tendency for liquids and/or gases to adhere to each others' services. A subtle difference, but an important one! So no, your HVAC technician's site isn't riddled with typos, they are just talking about two different things!
Just Needs Some TLC
Nobody likes to call in an HVAC technician for repairs. Luckily, with some tender love and care, and a little bit of maintenance, you can drastically reduce the likelihood you will ever need to. In fact, according to some studies, nine out of every ten HVAC repair calls due to system failures were just due to dirt and dust buildup.
Energy Hog
Our homes are full of gadgets and gizmos that are using electricity, from computers, to the microwave, to your HVAC system. But the HVAC system by far uses the majority of that energy, with an average of 54 percent of energy costs in a home coming from the HVAC unit.
