  • Specific Gravity. Specific gravity is the ratio between the density of an object and a reference substance. Since the specific gravity is characteristic to every substance, it can be used to compare substances for other qualities.
  • Hardness. Hardness is the ability of a substance to resist being molded. It speaks to its strength. There is a standard test used so that all substances can be compared.
  • Coolant Immersion. This is the process of transferring heat from a hot substance in order to cool it down. The warm liquid is usually passed over a heat exchanger connected to a radiator or fan. This is how air conditioners work and how CPUs are cooled.
  • Oil Immersion. Oil immersion is used to increase the resolving power of a microscope by immersing the lens and the specimen in a transparent oil. This is used for viewing bacteria.
  • Tensile Strength and Elongation. Tensile strength is the resistance of a material to breaking while under tension. Elongation is the amount of extension an object can take while under stress.
  • Tensile Strength and Elongation at Break. Tensile strength measures the maximum amount of stress a material can withstand being stretched before breaking. Elongation at break or fracture strain is the percentage increase of a material before it breaks.
  • Tear Strength. Tear strength is a measurement of the force required to tear a material.
  • Modulus. The modulus of materials is the amount of strain a substance can absorb before it fractures.
