Silicone Hoses: Beer Shelf Life Factors

14th Jan 2016

We have a lot of customers whose favorite pass-time is brewing beer. Our silicone hoses are perfect for beginning to expert home brewing set ups. If you're just getting into home brewing, you may be wondering how long beer lasts before it begins to spoil or take on weird off-flavors. As you may have guessed, this is determined by a few different factors and we're going to discuss those today.

  • Firstly, it's important to know that beer is much more stable when it's in a bottle or keg. Why? Because both of these forms of storage have better insulation from the negative effects of light, there's less head space, and the beer isn't coming into contact with the trub.
  • One factor to consider is whether or not your beer is clear. Clear beer is much more stable than darker beers and will keep longer.
  • Another factor to consider is temperature. Warm temperatures will drastically affect your beer's stability. If you can store you beer at cellar temperatures, this is ideal! Both very hot and very cold temperatures will have a detrimental affect on your beer.
  • Sunlight and fluorescent light are two other factors you should also consider. These two things are killers for beer and will make it skunky very quickly. It doesn't take long, either! In fact, if you leave your beer out in the sun, it can happen with in an hour

Regardless of how long your beer lasts, it should be known that as an organic product, it will change over time.
