As a company that specializes in quality silicone hosing, we get a lot of customers who are home brewers. We hear a lot of funny stories from our customers and we hear a lot about some of the most common home brewing myths out there. Today we're going to take a deeper look at some home brewing myths and debunk them once and for all.
- Your yeast count needs to be accurate to create a good beer. While yeast count does matter to a certain point, you're still going to get a good beer most of the time as long as your yeast can ferment your beer. While it's best to be as accurate as you can, it's not something that you should get too hung up on.
- You don't need your wort to oxidize for fermentation. The truth here is that if you want to achieve consistency with your beer, oxygen is absolutely crucial. Oxygen is imperative for yeast health and production, and if your beer is a high gravity beer, then oxygen is even more imperative!
- When you disturb grain bed, tannins are extracted. This isn't true: Tannins are not extracted when you disturb the grain bed. However, you will get tannin extraction when you use very hot water or if you grind your grain too fine.
- Grain will make a better quality beer than extract will. This is a myth that's absolutely false! Your beer will be just as good if you use extract brewing as it will be if you use all-grain brewing.
