What is a vacuum hose?

Vacuum hoses can be found throughout many vehicles, with cars generally having as many as a dozen working inside them. Generally, they are made out of rubber or rubber like materials. While modern electric cars may not have vacuum hoses, just about any car that runs on gasoline will. Diesel engines don't produce a vacuum naturally like conventional gas engines, but many are retrofitted with a vacuum pump in order to use vacuum power. Between the 1980s and 1990s, cars tended to have many more vacuum hoses than they do today. In fact, working on vacuum hoses on cars from this time is often compared to the complexity of the electrical wiring of a car of the same era. However, modern gas cars have streamlined their efficiency, and tend to use less vacuum hoses than cars from that era. Vacuum hoses tend to be anywhere between 3/16 inches in their inner diameter and 5/8 inches.

What does a vacuum hose do?

Vacuums can be used as a power source. That is their purpose in vehicles, where they power all types of things, including the vacuum brake booster, windshield wipers PCV valve, heater control valve, EGR valve, HVAC controls, and vacuum advance. All types of vacuum hose accessories are used to ensure that the vacuum power is utilized as efficiently as possible, like vacuum tees, valves, and trees.

Types of hoses

The term vacuum hose can refer to any of the flexible tubes that are used to transmit vacuum power throughout your vehicle. When the hoses get smaller, they tend to be referred to as "vacuum lines" or "vacuum tubing" rather than vacuum hoses, but they essentially work in the same way. Generally, there are six different increment measurements you'll find with vacuum hoses, although there are exceptions that prove the rule.

Vacuum hoses are usually made of rubber, but ours are made of silicone. Over time, no matter what the material, vacuum hoses need to be replaced as part of regular maintenance. However, our silicone hoses tend to be more durable than rubber ones, and make for a little less maintenance work. Unlike other rubber like components of a vehicle, like brake lines or drive belts, a failing vacuum pose doesn't create an immediate danger to you or your vehicle, however leaving the problem to exacerbate may eventually cause catastrophic engine failure.
